La Via Campesina South Asia: Farmers Movements Launch Gram Swaraj School, Organize Training Camp with Activists from across India

On the occasion of the 77th birth anniversary of the iconic farmers’ leader Prof. M.D. Nanjundaswamy, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) organized a series of events from the 13th to the 16th Feb to commemorate his memory. The North and South Indian farmers movements jointly inaugurated their own Gram Swaraj (Village self rule) School called the “Prof. Nanjundaswamy Life school” as well as an auditorium called “Mahinder Singh Tikait School of Struggles,” named in the honor of the late BKU farmers’ leader. The Gram Swaraj School is located at the KRRS farmers’ training center – Amrita Bhoomi in the Chamragajar Nagar district ofMedha Patkar and Yudhvir SinghKarnataka. The activities were spearheaded by Chukki Nanjundaswamy, managing trustee of Amrita Bhoomi and daughter of late Prof. M.D. Nanjundaswamy.

Seed carnival to be held at Amrita Bhoomi today – KARNATAKA – The Hindu

The establishment of a seed bank and inauguration of an international seed carnival at Amrutha Bhoomi will be a tribute to former Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president M.D. Nanjundaswamy. He had envisaged setting up of an international centre for sustainable development of rare and endangered plant species. Nanjundaswamy was instrumental in setting up Amrutha Bhoomi in 180 acres of land in the foothills of the Biligiri Ranga forest range.

Amritha Boomi-History

The most important of all for man being food and health, “Amrita Bhoomi” initial objective is to revive traditional agricultural technologies in these areas, as they have become crucial and critical issues today, because of the introduction of monocultures in food and agriculture mainly through the much heralded “Green Revolution” technology. The implementation and practice of it even for over fifty years, has left over 100 million people of the world hungry to-day. This is mainly because monocultures in agriculture are, according to even “common sense”, cannot succeed in a planet with the rich diversity in agro-climatic conditions: But, modern science is still trying to persist that through the second “green revolution” technology, namely biotechnology, it can feed this growing hungry population on this planet.

But, biotechnology is again a technology producing monocultures, developed by transnational corporations, only to establish their monopoly over the seed and thereby the food-systems of the world, only for profit, would again push more people to hunger. The latest in this effort of TNCs are the “Terminator Technology” and the “Verminator Technology” which produce “sterile seeds” which do not terminate at all when sowed for the second time.

Innovator: Jagannath Manjhi

Vocation: Forest food preservation expert

Location: Muniguda, Odisha

Our latest parinda, Jagannath Manjhi, is a tribal who lives in Odisha’s beautiful Niyamgiri Hills. These are the very Niyamgiri Hills that were going to be dug up for bauxite after the government decided to give a contract for the same to the multi-national corporation Vedanta Limited. If this plan had gone ahead, it would have endangered and displaced tribals from at least 400 villages in the hills. So far, the tribals of Niyamgiri have been successful in their struggle to save the hills, the forests, and the rivers in the region.

However, after the corporate giants had to bow down before the tribals, the former devised a plan to launch an indirect attack on the tribes. The agenda? To distance the tribals from their culture, their land and their forests, weaken the community and their ideologies in an effort to push them out of their forests. When Manjhi sensed this danger, he became determined to find a solution to safeguard his community’s identity and its culture. He recalls that the government first approached their land six years ago, and since then Manjhi has been anxious and uncomfortable about the government interference in their region.

“A few years ago, I met Debajit Sarangi through an organisation called Living Farm that works towards protecting forest food. He offered me an opportunity to work with him. This is when I realised that the tribal land situation is so huge and ghastly that I cannot do anything alone. I understood that I couldn’t do anything to protect our land without the support of the community. And that’s when I officially associated myself with Living Farm, and started visiting villages to inform the local communities about this looming danger. We created awareness about the importance of locally available food, the diversity of our jungles, and the need to protect them. With discussions on how we could protect our locally available food, we learnt how to preserve the dignity of our people and save our jungles and our land from danger. We also frequently organised training workshops for tribals to educate them about how they could conserve various seeds,” Manjhi says.

Tribals in the area have been successful once in protecting their jungles from urban hunters (corporates), however they remained unaware of the many other dangers that were looming over their heads. The start of this danger was with the establishment of formal schools in villages. “I’m not saying that education is a bad thing,” Manjhi says.

“But education should be such that a person is able to learn about his immediate surroundings and mould oneself into the environment and earn a livelihood from it. What’s the point for an education that distances you from your own culture and land — which is revered as your mother? Modern schools are like an arms factory that can only destroy things.”

“Formal education has started to turn tribals into slaves, at least mentally. The establishment wants to make us ‘educated’ but there is not even a mention of our culture or our knowledge that has been collected over thousands of years. Modern education has been trying to tell us that we’re ‘backward’ and ‘poor’ because we don’t have money. I want to ask people who agree with this, ‘what is the definition of being poor?” he asks.

On the one hand are people who spend their lives as servants of somebody to earn money to fulfil their daily needs. On the other are people who fulfil their needs with resources naturally available in their surroundings, without ever harming the environment.

“You tell me, who’s more educated? Those who don’t know how to grow their own food, build their own houses, weave their own clothes or provide natural treatment? Or those who have the talent and knowledge to live their lives on their own? Are those who study and talk about adding poison to food more educated or those who grow food in their surroundings using traditional methods and no chemicals? If you speak to our elders, you will know that there are no traces of malnutrition, cancer or diabetes in our tribes. These are all modern diseases. This is because all the nutrition that our body needs to keep us healthy is easily available in our immediate surroundings,” he adds.

Further, Manjhi stresses that through these “temples of education”, the establishment is only trying to take away our talent and our knowledge. If this talent and knowledge is erased from our community, we will turn into slaves. And that is why we’re working towards protecting our forest produce. If we can save our forest food from the web of modern development, then we won’t be forced to become anyone’s slaves.

In the end, Manjhi’s message for city dwellers is:  You need to erase the perception that we’re backward or poor. Your existence depends on our existence and our knowledge. If there are no tribals, urban folk will not be able to survive for too long because one needs real talent and authentic knowledge to stay alive — and these are something that tribes hold.

La Via Campesina South Asia: Agroecology: Youth will be the change!

Youth are leaving agriculture. Our agonizing countryside doesn’t exactly paint a rosy picture to build a life upon. Their parents encourage them to go to the city, take up a white-collar job -‘we don’t want our children to suffer like us,’ they say. Yet many rural youth experience that visceral pull to the land. They want, like their forefathers, to live in the countryside. They want to focus on the success stories instead of the misery. The city doesn’t really excite them, some of them have already tried their hand at IT or engineering. They know it’s possible to come back to the land, but they just don’t know how to start.

Farmer-to-farmer training session on Millets at Amrita Bhoomi | Karnataka, India

At least 60 farmers, mostly from the neighboring indigenous Soliga community, as well as other small farmers including some urban origin farmers gathered for a farmer-to-farmer training session on millets at the Amrita Bhoomi agroecology center, on 2nd July 2016.Amrita Bhoomi is linked to the Karnataka State Farmers’ Movement (KRRS for its initials in Kannada language) and is La Via Campesina’s agroecology school in South Asia.

La Via Campesina South Asia: Amritha Bhoomi (LVC Agroecology School)

Amrita Bhoomi (meaning Eternal Earth) is a Centre for Sustainable Development and School of Agroecology founded by the Indian peasant movement KRRS in Karnataka in South India. It consists of several components that reflect our commitment to a more prosperous, equitable and ecological future. These components revolve around the training and promotion of agro-ecology and natural agriculture, renewable energy, green building, and economic diversification based on small cottage industries, as well as education, combating child labor, inequality and discrimination, and the creation of cooperatives and direct links between producers and consumers. All of these components are oriented towards greater self-reliance and capacity for collective action of the peasant communities. Local communities want to be provided with educational tools through this project so they can rebuild their independence and dignity. Within Amrita Bhoomi we work towards the eradication of poverty through the collective construction of ecological and equitable local economies that protect them from the ravages of the market global.
