The State government has decided to open procurement centres in Bidar and Gadag to stop the slide in green gram prices.Farmer leaders, however, are angry that the government’s move has come three weeks after they have sold all their grain.The government announced the opening of these centres in select Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yards in the two districts and fixed a market intervention price of Rs. 5,250 per quintal. Farmers however, are not happy.

A federation of the organisations and associations spearheading the struggle under the Kalasa-Banduri Nala Horata Samiti will be formed soon.It will launch a “mass movement” for justice from the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal, besides from the Union and State governments.A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of leaders of various organisations from nine taluks in Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad and Gadag districts here on Sunday.The meeting was presided over by Vijay Kulkarni, founder president of the Kalasa-Banduri Nala Horata Samiti, formed two decades ago.

Protests erupted across Karnataka against the rejection of the state’s interim plea by the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal, on Thursday.Several north Karnataka cities, including Hubballi, Dharwad, Gadag and Belagavi witnessed violent protests by farmers and pro-Kannada organisations. Normal life has been affected in these districts and movement of vehicles has almost come to a standstill.

Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene will organise a state-level farmers’ convention, as part of 36th Farmer Martyrs’ Day, at Gadag on July 21. Addressing reporters at Jaladarshini guest house here on Friday, Raitha Sangha general secretary Badagalpura Nagendra said, “Tributes will be paid to the farmers who sacrificed their lives in Nargund-Navalgund movement. The conference will be held at Swami Vivekananda Sabha Bhavan at Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC).”

The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) will hold a State-level farmers conference to deliberate on the issues haunting the farm sector at Vivekananda Hall in Gadag on July 21.KRRS State president Chamarasa Malipatil told presspersons here on Thursday that the conference would be held on the occasion of the farmer’s martyr day programme.
